Presentation of Project Pink Planning

to

International Federation Conference

Barbados 2008

  • Project Pink like many babies was conceived after a good bottle of red wine,  and a conversation based on ‘Why aren’t women falling over themselves to become Soroptimists?’.

  • The result  was a high profile venture  encouraging the general public to be involved in raising awareness of breast cancer  whilst at the same time giving us a vehicle to promote what we are , what we do and why we do it.

  •  Our plan was to gather a thousand people in pink to form a living breast cancer ribbon , a collection for Breast Cancer Care, and an information distribution, all this to be  followed by a fashion show …………  and from there it  just grew and  grew into a major event.

  •   It’s essential to spend time putting together an image. We focused on presenting a strong and optimistic angle, starting with  the publicity and information  pack, our logo & strap line, down to our pink wigs and  t-shirts before  we made any approach to  possible  sponsors or to the media,  as it was vital to us that we came over as a professional organisation.

  •  Have a realistic budget for your expenses, and keep within it. Don’t be afraid to ask for a discount or better still for free.  If you don’t ask you don’t get.

  •  Plan well, but be flexible and allow the project to evolve. Try some ‘blue sky thinking’, it’s amazing  where a ‘what if’  thought will end up.

  •  Make sure that permissions are gained where needed, health & safety and risk assessments are done, and licences applied for. Liaise with your local college or university, they have resources available that might be useful to you, and encourage  people  to give  their time or their skill to the Project. Involve the whole of your Club, there’s almost certainly a job for everyone.  Don’t be deterred by negativity,  just be sure to let your enthusiasm for the project inspire others to want to join in.

  • This is only  the essence of what we did. I hope in a moment the following pictures will speak for themselves. If you’d like to know more, contact us, we are pleased to share.

  •  On the day the weather was NOT kind to us.  We didn’t get our 1000 people in pink …… The piazza was dampened, but not our spirit.   Because, the wishing tree worked, the fashion show worked, the Breast Cancer awareness worked , the money collection worked and the promotion of Soroptimism worked.

  • We WERE  bold, we DID  think big, and we definitely made a difference.

  •  Thank you.
