Club Profile

Jill Lane - President 2008 - 2009

Jill had a scientific education and moved into advice work.  She is currently involved in the management of several local charities.  This, together with extensive world travel, has shown her the need for the Programme Action work done by Soroptimist International and finds working with other Club members very rewarding.

She has three children and seven grandchildren.

Marjorie Sayer - President Elect 2008 - 2009

Born and raised on the Wirral.

Trained as a State Registered Nurse and State Certified Midwife. Worked in Paediatrics until early retirement in 2004.

Married David (Officer, Royal Navy) in 1974, had 3 children (Fiona, Lucy and James) and 2 exchange jobs (Australia and Holland).

Currently a volunteer at Saltram House (NT) and Plymouth Arts Centre as well as working as a Magistrate.

The insignia of S.I. Plymouth & District  was made by Plymouth silversmith's Paige, Keen & Paige and is hallmarked Birmingham 1931. It weighs 4 ounces.

The Art Deco design, unusually, shows the complete Soroptimist figure. A sailing ship commemorates Plymouth's maritime history. It is set with 4 malachite green semiprecious stones found in East Cornwall.

The City Arms were added later, donated to the club by Miss Dennis, Club Treasurer for 19 years.

In 1991 President Debbie Coleman, Fine Arts Restorer, arranged for the silver bars engraved with the names and dates of Club Presidents to be removed from the blue ribbon and made into a supporting chain.
