Look what we did for

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

on

Saturday 4th October 2008

Plymouth Soroptimists, in conjunction with several prominent Plymouth organisations (see below), hosted a breast cancer awareness campaign in Plymouth and the surrounding areas.

The following events took place:

  • A manned ‘Wishing Tree’ made by the College of Art & Design was sited in House of Fraser for 1 week, followed by another week in Drake Circus Shopping Centre, People bought a Wish, Hope or Dream for £1 and hung it on the tree, with proceeds going to Breast Cancer Care.   Collections were made in aid of Breast Cancer Care and we collected £5,200 including £1800 from the Wishing Tree.  It is hoped that the wishes can be turned into a book with proceeds also going to Breast Cancer.

  • A Fashion Event was also held at Drake Circus shopping mall.  At the same time there was an Education & Awareness exhibition. Click here to go to photogallery, then click on Fashion Show.

Cheque presentation of £5,200 to Breast Cancer Care

In spite of the unkind weather, approx. 600 people turned up dressed in PINK on the Armada Way Piazza in Plymouth City Centre, to form a human ribbon in the shape of the Breast Cancer ribbon. A helicopter from Hovercam together with the Fire Service aerial platform from Green Watch, enabled us to have some very good

The event was attended by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress.

The Herald had been running editorial on the event and gave the whole ‘HER’ supplement over to Project Pink on the Wednesday before the event.  The supplement was coloured pink!  OCEAN MINI was our major sponsor and generously donated £2000 towards the project negotiated by EVENTsw.

Plymouth Sound provided a Thunder Crew together with Amy Johnson, Choreographer , who worked tremendously hard to make the event a success. They also ran a competition from Monday 29th September to Thursday 2nd October, for two lucky listeners to win a hair & beauty makeover on Saturday 4th October, in conjunction with Project Pink. This competition along with the presenter talk-ups, website presence and Thunder activity on Saturday 4th October at the Piazza was free of charge.

We were invited to make a presentation to our Federation Conference in Barbados to be given by one of our members.  Click here for more details.
